Yesterday I learnt something about myself: I’m not cut out to be a landscape photographer!
I had booked an afternoon with Dewald Kirsten, renowned landscaper, in the hopes of acquiring a new perspective on photography. Being a portrait photographer, my “landscape” shots are usually taken by pulling over the side of the road and pointing my iPhone through the window.
We met at 2pm at Blouberg beach to get the iconic Table Mountain shot, and that is the shot you see above, taken at 2.05pm. Then we stayed there, and we stayed there and we stayed there. The mountain didn’t move, nor did the beach, nor did the flowers. Hmmm, what to do? I photographed the seagulls. Then I photographed the sand. Then I went to the bathroom. I came back from the bathroom break and the landscape photographers had progressed closer to the sea -exciting! I put my bag down, set up my temperamental tripod and started to take photos of the same mountain and the same beach, just from a bit closer, see below. Just as I was getting into it, a Labrador came and peed on my camera bag, and I know it was a sign. I’ll never do landscape photography again!
Ironically, the favorite shot of the day…the one taken at 2.03 on my iPhone. See it on Instagram.
Happy weekend y’all!
